Women Embrace Menopause as a New Beginning—and Cosmetic Surgery is Helping Them Do it with Confidence

The conversation around menopause has evolved from hush-hush to hot topic, with women reclaiming “the change” as a time of renewal, strength, and unprecedented self-investment. No longer seen as the end of youth, but the start of a confident new chapter, menopause today is about aging with confidence—and for facial plastic surgery, the impact has been profound.

“The growing conversation around menopause and aesthetics marks a significant shift in how women approach this life stage, empowering them with the knowledge and resources to embrace and celebrate it with confidence,” says facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Patrick Byrne, president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

As such, according to the latest data from the AAFPRS annual survey, a total of 28 percent of members agree that patients seeking treatments reference symptoms of perimenopause and menopause-related concerns as a reason for consultation, highlighting a growing trend in facial rejuvenation during this transformative phase of life.

Facelifts, rhinoplasty, and blepharoplasty remain the top three surgical procedures requested by women, answering to the fact that hormonal shifts during menopause significantly impact the skin and facial structure, leading to thinner skin, sagging around the eyes, and weakened facial bones. Notably, 67 percent of AAFPRS member respondents believe the average age of facelift patients will continue to decrease—a statistic that reflects not only the technological advancements in the procedure but also a significant reduction in its societal stigma. As for non-surgical procedures, skin treatments, neurotoxins, and fillers are the most requested. “Soft tissue fillers, especially biostimulatory fillers, can help replace collagen stores from the inside out and outside in, which can be helpful for women experiencing a drop in collagen levels, leading to wrinkles and fine lines,” says Byrne.
